This is the interior of the Drinking Fountain of the Birds, an Islamic Style pavilion with a spherical dome and an Arab inscription written around the circumference. The construction under Dom Fernando II is compared to that of Dom Manuel I (“The sovereign Dom Manuel built this blessed chapel in the name of Our Lady of Pena, in 1503, commemorating the safe return of Dom Vasco de Gama from his discovery of various lands such as the Cap of Good Hope and India, among others. It was in this magnificent royal splendor that his Royal Highness the sovereign Dom Fernando II, married to her Royal Highness Dona Maria II built the pavilion in 1840”). The name derives from the small birds that decorate the interior of the dome and the drinking fountain. The tiles are similar to those on the main facade of the Palace.
